The Nebelwerfer was one of the earliest Multiple Rocket Launcher Systems ever made. Put into service during 1940 on the side of the Wehrmacht, this piece of machinery was armed with 6 150 mm rocket launching tubes. During the battles it fought in, the Nebelwerfer could always be heard from far away by enemy troops, as its rockets made a "screaming" sound.
During Warsaw Uprising the insurgents nicknamed the Nebelwerfers "The Mooing Cows" or "Szafa"* due to their sounds. On of the worst rockets were phosphorus weapons, which burned human's body to the bone.
Here: [link] you can see some poster from the WU time. The text says: When the cow is mooing, don't stay in the gate!
*It means "cabinet", but I'd say it's because Nebelwerfer makes the "shaaaaaf!" noise when firing, so: "shaaaaf!" --> "shafa", "the one that makes the shaaaaf! noise".
Quite effective in urban warfare like Warsaw Uprising. Even though the missiles were unguided, a strike of six projectiles fired one after another leaves pretty much a sea of rubble. And the sound was quite amazing and demoralizing. Have a video: [link]
Oh, now I found some other launcher, mounted on Renault UE, which was just a wooden frame for missiles. So Nebelwerfers were nicknamed "Cows", and Renaults were nicknamed "Cabinets".

"Those mooing cows are killing us!".
I don't really know much about this weapon yet, how effective was it?
I love the Nebelwerfer
